Driveways, slabs and footings

Concrete Removal on the Central Coast

On a flat Peninsula block a driveway is a morning's work. On a Terrigal hillside it can be the hardest part of the whole job.

Typical jobs

  • Driveways, including steep hillside driveways.
  • Crossovers and kerbs, with council's approval process.
  • House slabs and footings after demolition.
  • Garage and shed slabs.
  • Paths, patios and pool surrounds.
  • Retaining wall footings.

Hillside driveways

Terrigal, Wamberal, Avoca, Point Clare and Gosford's escarpment suburbs have driveways at grades that challenge machines and trucks. The approach depends on the grade, width, turning room at the top and bottom, and whether traffic control is needed on the street.

Flat sandy blocks

On the Peninsula and around the lakes, access is usually easy but soft sandy ground can bog trucks in wet weather. Ground protection mats and scheduling around rain help.

Reinforcement and thickness

Mesh and bar need hammering rather than bucket breaking, and older driveways laid over earlier concrete can be twice as thick as expected. The inspection checks edges and cores where needed.

Services underneath

A Before You Dig Australia enquiry, and locating where pipes or cables may run below. Saw-cutting at boundaries and against retained concrete.

The crossover

The crossover is on council land. Removal or reconstruction generally needs an application and inspection with Central Coast Council, and the new crossover has to meet council's standards. See council and approvals.

Disposal

Clean concrete is recyclable; mixed loads cost more; asbestos-contaminated material must go to a licensed facility.

FAQs

Questions people ask before they commit

How much does concrete removal cost on the Central Coast?

As a 2026 guide, plain paths and patios often run around $55 to $100 per square metre removed and carted, with reinforced driveways and slabs more. Steep driveways, tight access and thick or heavily reinforced concrete push it higher. Small jobs carry a minimum charge.

Do I need council approval to replace a driveway crossover?

The section between your boundary and the road is council land, and Central Coast Council generally requires an application and inspection to remove or rebuild a driveway crossover. Work inside your boundary usually does not need that specific approval.

Is concrete recycled?

Clean concrete is commonly recycled into road base and aggregate. Keeping it separate from soil and other waste lowers disposal cost.

Can you remove concrete on a steep driveway safely?

Yes, with the right method. Work generally starts from the top or bottom depending on access, broken sections are loaded progressively, and machines are chosen for the grade. Saw-cutting keeps breaks clean where concrete is retained.
